He wanted a divorce. And to be friends.

Episode 8: Twenty Minutes

My husband told me he wanted a divorce, and about twenty minutes later, in the same conversation, that he couldn't imagine not being friends with me. I've told that story on the show before. This episode isn't about him. It's about what he did without knowing he was doing it, because I've seen the same move in rooms that had nothing to do with marriage.

Years earlier, a boss handed me a literal list: do these things and the promotion is yours. I worked that list for months, and the work was praised over and over by the same boss who wrote it. Then the promotion was announced. Announced, not discussed. It went to someone else, and I found out at the same moment a room full of coworkers did, doing the math in real time while I kept my face normal. Afterward I got the corporate version of the friendship offer: it just wasn't your time. Keep doing what you're doing.

Two rooms, years apart, the same shape. Somebody does their processing in private, on their own timeline, and hands you a finished decision, expecting you to arrive at acceptance in the time it takes them to say the sentence. They got a whole process. You got a moment. And their calm — the thing that made my shock look like the problem — wasn't maturity. It was a head start.

Maybe your version was a reorg deck, a friend's finished moving plans, your parents selling the house with the sign already in the yard. If someone has handed you a done deal and started measuring your reaction against the graceful one they rehearsed, this one's for you. You're not being difficult. You're being on time.
